Aluminum is fast and cheap. Titanium and superalloys cut 4–8× slower and cost 10–20× more per pound.
More setups, more tool changes, more fixturing. A part with 5 axes of features takes longer than one with 3.
Calling out ±0.0002" instead of ±0.005" means slower feeds, more passes, and more inspection time.
Setup is amortized across the run. At 100 pieces, setup drops to a rounding error. At 10, it dominates the price.
Bare machined parts ship fastest. Anodize, passivation, and bead blast add 3–7 days and 5–30% to unit cost.
FAI, PPAP, material traceability, and SPC add engineering overhead. Regulated industries pay for this and require it.
